Experience an authentic dairy in the heart of Currumbin Valley

The next step of our Big Aussie Adventure has kept us in Queensland for a little longer. Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, and the pockets of outbreaks over the last few weeks in adjacent states, Kane and I have become a little uneasy travelling too far from our base in the Gold Coast.

So this week we headed to a secluded Airbnb called Hillview Dairy in the Currumbin Valley.

The drive from the Gold Coast was really easy, the GPS guided us with no problems and the scenic drive really set the scene for what was going to be a wonderful few days.

As we drove through the town, we saw cows, horses and even some alpacas grazing on the side of the road. As we drove in, we were greeted by 3 or 4 horses that live on the property and wanted to come and say hello!

Inside, we found a nice hand written card from the owner Simone, she had also left us a bottle of bubbly, some local tips and some snacks for the horses which greeted us earlier. As usual, Muesli, our dog decided the horses were her mortal enemy and spent the first 15 minutes trying to bark them away. She failed.

Simone’s own property is “next door”, which was comforting to know given we were staying in a 100+ year old dairy in the middle of a field. If we needed anything she was just a few hundred meters away.

The entire airbnb has been incredibly restored whilst retaining a truly rustic vibe by using materials that were originally from the dairy in the restoration. The week we were there she was adding a plunge pool to the decking, which, when complete will offer a stunning water experience paired with the incredible valley views similar to what you might expect when visiting the Onsen Hot Pools in New Zealand. Now we can’t go to New Zealand this is the next best thing!

There was in-building air-con however we decided it would be more fun to rug up and start the fire instead for a really authentic experience. It gave Kane an opportunity to show me just how manly he can be, haha!

I would say my favourite part of the entire Dairy experience was the bathroom. If you enjoy taking photos (like I do!), this room is instagram goals! I’d never actually seen a bathroom with a clear roof before and I loved having a bath “under the stars”.

Getting off the grid for a couple of days was so beneficial to my mental health, I’m realising just how important it is to “switch off” for my own good, and with the limited cell-service this property gave me a few moments of solitude and I cherished it greatly.

I’d highly recommend the Hillview Dairy, and suggest booking it ASAP before Simone realises she’s massively undercharging for such a wonderful experience.
